Non-Surgical Hair Restoration

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is a non-surgical treatment for hair restoration.  It has mostly been used in cases of genetic hair loss, but is now being used in other forms of hair loss, as well.  It allows the body an opportunity to heal itself.  It involves drawing blood from the arm, then using a centrifuge to spin the blood and concentrate the healing factors already present in the plasma portion of the blood, while separating out the red blood cells.  The healing factor rich plasma is then injected back into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Coming soon… stem cell therapy with PRP!  Stem cell injection is on the cutting edge of hair restoration.  In adults, stem cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing adult tissues.  Your own stem cells are harvested from the fat tissue in the abdomen, and injected into the scalp with PCP to regenerate lost follicles.  This is very exciting emerging therapy!

Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser is a non-surgical treatment for hair restoration used in cases of genetic hair loss as well as in frontal fibrosing alopecia.  This is a cool temperature laser that is used to stimulate hair growth — treatments can be given in the form of a comb, cap, or hood.  Treatments are delivered every-other-day for 15-30 minutes depending on the device.

Surgical Hair Restoration

Hair Transplantation

Hair transplant is also known as hair restoration surgery.  The procedure involves redistribution of hairs on the head to fill in areas that are thinning or bald.  It is a potential treatment option for multiple types of alopecia.  It involves removing the hair from the back of the head, and placing them elsewhere in units of 1-4 hairs.  This gives a very natural appearance.  The hair grows normally and can be cut and styles just like the other hairs on the head.  Recovery time is about 7 days, and the final appearance of the transplant is visible at 9-12 months after the procedure.  (Photos courtesy of Dr. Ackerman)
